A vehicle on the side of the road needing a spare tire change.

Getting a flat tire is never fun, but knowing how to change it can save you time and frustration. At Diamond State Mobile Mechanic, we want to ensure drivers in Springdale, Siloam Springs, Bentonville, Rogers, Fayetteville, and Gentry are prepared for unexpected roadside situations. Follow this step-by-step guide to safely replace your flat tire with a spare.

What You’ll Need:

  • Spare tire

  • Car jack

  • Lug wrench

  • Vehicle owner’s manual

  • Flashlight (if needed)

Step 1: Find a Safe Location

If you get a flat tire while driving, slowly reduce speed and find a safe, flat area to pull over. Avoid hills or soft ground, and turn on your hazard lights.

Step 2: Engage the Parking Brake

For added safety, engage your parking brake and place wheel wedges around the opposite tire to prevent the vehicle from rolling.

Step 3: Loosen the Lug Nuts

Before lifting the car, use the lug wrench to slightly loosen the lug nuts by turning them counterclockwise. Do not fully remove them yet.

Step 4: Lift the Car with the Jack

Refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the correct jack points. Place the jack securely under the frame and slowly raise the car until the flat tire is about 6 inches off the ground.

Step 5: Remove the Flat Tire

Fully unscrew the loosened lug nuts and carefully pull the flat tire straight off. Place it flat on the ground to avoid it rolling away.

Step 6: Install the Spare Tire

Align the spare tire with the lug bolts and slide it onto the wheel hub. Hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the bolts to hold the tire in place.

Step 7: Lower the Car and Tighten the Lug Nuts

Slowly lower the car using the jack until the spare tire rests firmly on the ground. Fully tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to ensure even pressure.

Step 8: Check Tire Pressure

If you have a tire pressure gauge, check the spare’s air pressure. Temporary spare tires should be inflated to about 60 PSI.

Final Step: Drive Cautiously

Spare tires, especially space-saving spares, are not designed for long distances. Drive cautiously and get your flat tire repaired or replaced as soon as possible.
